Far and Wide Collective founder Hegvig Alexander spent the first chapter of her career working in development in Afghanistan. She noticed locals were creating gorgeous crafts, but having trouble connecting with markets and buyers. When Hegvig moved to Canada, she decided to take matters into her own hands. “Something had to change,” she said.

Crafts are the second largest economy in most developing countries after agriculture. Hegvig made it her business to create a supply chain to support craftsmen and women who create unique, stunning goods from ceramics to woodwork to jewelry in post-conflict and emerging countries, and connect them with markets. Far and Wide was born.

The baskets are crafted from a local plant called sisal, from which the women make string, dye the string with the vibrant colors found in Kenya’s national dress, and finally weave it into lovely unique baskets. Supporting the Kasigau Weaving Cooperative helps improve the lives of these talented women and their communities.
